The Young Queen, Wadsworth After Wilding (Print)
The Young Queen, Wadsworth After Wilding (Print)
Giclee print edition of 50 on archival Hahnemühle Photo Rag paper
70 x 64 cm
The original of this painting was done after the iconic image by Dorothy Wilding, the first woman to be appointed as the Official Royal Photographer for the 1937 Coronation.
Wilding took the first official portraits of the Queen at a sitting just twenty days into her reign. These images helped forge the new monarch's public image, as they were used on postage stamps, and were sent to British embassies worldwide.
The original was made with acrylic & oil on two sides of Mylar sanded, thick Mylar in 2016 and is smaller than size of this print edition. I thought it would be interesting to do prints at a larger size, increasing the tension inherent in the piece between pop art and classic portraiture.
